An air brake chamber is a system that converts compressed air pressure into mechanical force. This force is then used to rotate a brake camshaft. This system is highly reliable and requires no special maintenance. Its parts are an air inlet, a cover, a diaphragm, a support disk, push rod, connecting fork, and a clamp. Some air brake chamber manufacturers also offer high-speed operation, allowing you to brake at high speeds and maintain safety.
The rated volume of an air brake chamber is the volume of air that a vehicle can move through it. Typically, this volume is larger than the "nominal" displacement of an air brake chamber. This is because the "rated volume" of a brake chamber does not account for the void ahead of the relaxed piston or diaphragm. Also, the displaced volume must include the pre-fill volume.
Air brake chambers are available in two standard sizes, as well as in long-stroke versions. Standard-stroke chambers are typically 2.5 inches long, while long-stroke chambers are three inches long. Long-stroke chambers require a special system. However, they can add an extra margin of safety for the driver and eliminate brake drag. Long-stroke chambers are becoming increasingly common on newer trucks.
